Amityville, N.Y. - Teen Arrested After Hitting Woman in Wheelchair on Broadway

Amityville, N.Y. (June 12, 2019) - A woman in a wheelchair was injured after a teenager hit her with his vehicle before fleeing the scene of the accident, according to police. The New York pedestrian accident occurred on Tuesday night at the intersection of Broadway and Oak Street.

wheelchair.jpgPolice say that the accident occurred when the teenager, identified as 18-year-old Yonis Rivera, was driving north on Broadway when he attempted to turn left on Oak Street. While he was making his turn, he struck a 42-year-old woman who was in a wheelchair, causing her to fall out of the chair, which then became lodged under his vehicle. Rivera then drove away from the accident, dragging the chair for two blocks before he finally hit a telephone pole on Ketcham Avenue, where he then attempted to flee on foot.

Rivera was later caught by police, where he then asked about the condition of the woman he hit. Rivera was charged with second-degree reckless endangerment, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident with injury, and operating a vehicle without a license.

The woman was taken to Good Samaritan Medical Hospital in West Islip for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
