How to Stop Texting and Driving

The Dangers Surrounding Texting and Driving

There are significant dangers that we face every day on the road when we drive. These dangers can be due to animals that wander onto the road, they can be due to weather that changes the conditions on the road, but most often, these dangers come from ourselves and other drivers. We as drivers often make unsafe decisions as we drive, whether that be driving while drunk, driving while not watching the roadway, or watching because our phones are more interesting to us than driving is, all of which can cause us to be involved in a serious accident.

Driving while texting or being on a phone is a huge issue that we as drivers are dealing with today. Driving while texting contributes to 1.6 million accidents per year, which also contributes to thousands of injuries and thousands of deaths as well. While this issue is very prevalent and feels as though it will take a long time to correct, there are people and groups who are trying to bring an end to this problem, and it's actually much easier to stop than people may realize.

After being hurt in an auto accident in which someone was on their phone, contact a personal injury lawyer to see what you might be owed for your injuries.

Tips to Stop Texting and Driving

Thumbnail image for texting driving.jpgWhen you drive, you may be tempted to text or be on your phone, and it may seem impossible to kick the habit. Luckily there are many tips you can employ to help you stop your bad texting habits and make the road safer for everyone:

Keeping your phone out of reach: When you drive, having your phone nearby gives you the temptation to use it. However, if you choose to put your phone in a place that you can't reach, you will take away the temptation you may have to use it. Next time you drive, put your phone in your backseat or in your truck to ensure you will not be able to get it as you are behind the wheel.

Turning your phone off or on silent: It's been proven that when we hear our phones make noise, we are drawn to it to see what the noise was for. These urges to see what is on our phone screens are difficult to fight sometimes, so to help with this issue, simply put your phone on silent mode or turn it off. When your phone cannot make noise, you are less likely to be distracted, which will help keep everyone on the road safer.

Using an app to stop your phone use: There are several apps today that allow you to set up a plan for when you drive so that you are not distracted. These apps can help you by doing things like send messages to people trying to get in contact with you letting them know you are busy and cannot answer right away, putting your phone in a type of "do not disturb" setting, and many other helpful things as well. It's worth looking into these apps, especially if you are easily tempted by your phone as you drive.
