Grand Island, N.Y. (May 23, 2019) - A man was charged with DWI after he caused a head-on collision in New York this week. The New York drunk driving accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon on the North Grand Island Bridge and involved two vehicles total, according to police.

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for alcoholic beverages.jpgThe accident occurred when the vehicle entered the bridge driving south on the northbound lanes and hit a second vehicle head-on. Both drivers, who have remained unidentified, suffered minor injures in the accident; each vehicle only held one occupant. Police arrived on-scene and, after assessing the situation, arrested the wrong-way driver on "driving while intoxicated" charges.

Traffic was delayed significantly during rush hour traffic due to the accident. The bridge reopened later in the day, with authorities stating that no damage was done to the structure of the bridge in the accident.

Drunk Driving Accidents and Their Frustrating Causes

Drunk driving accidents occur multiple times every day, despite the fact that driving while drunk is illegal. Police have found that, in an average amount of these accidents, the typical blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) is 0.16%, which is twice the legal limit. When a person is legally considered unsafe to drive, which is when they are at a BAC of 0.08%, they will experience issues like difficulty concentration, decreased motor functions, and inability to keep their vehicle in their lane. These issues are only worsened when more alcohol is in their system, so it's easy to see how these accidents are so frequent and dangerous if the average BAC is twice the legal limit.
