How teens can prevent pedestrian accidents

As a teenager, you may find yourself acting as a pedestrian from time to time. After all, it can be enjoyable to travel by foot. While this may be an exciting time in your life, it's important to remember that it can be dangerous as well. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do as a teen to prevent your involvement in an accident:

-- Be seen. No matter what it takes, make sure drivers can see you. This means wearing bright clothes, and maybe even reflective gear if traveling at night.

-- Know the rules of the road. This is extremely important, as breaking a rule could increase the likelihood of being involved in an accident. For example, you should only cross the street at a crosswalk.

-- Look for traffic. You should always have your eyes out for traffic. Are there cars backing up in the area? How fast are the vehicles traveling? Make sure you are aware of the areas in which vehicles are traveling.

-- Walk defensively. This means many things, such as remaining alert and keeping your cellphone in your pocket. Distractions increase the risk of an accident.

Just the same as always, teenagers often find themselves walking or riding their bike. There is nothing wrong with this, however, the chance of an accident with a motor vehicle is very real.

Regardless of your age, you should know what you can do to prevent accidents in New Jersey. This will go a long way in keeping you safe, healthy, and happy at all times. The fear of an accident shouldn't scare you away from being a pedestrian. It should simply open your eyes as to how you can act in a safe manner.
