What are the best tips for improved pedestrian safety?

When it comes to pedestrian safety, it is important to know exactly what you can do to avoid an accident. This holds true whether you are the pedestrian or a motor vehicle operator. Either way, you never want to find yourself involved in an accident.

There are many things you can do to improve your level of safety as a pedestrian. Here are some tips to follow:

-- Remain visible at all times. Regardless of the time of day, you want to make sure that drivers can see you. This is particularly important during night time hours. According to the National Center for Statistics and Analysis, roughly one third of all pedestrian deaths occur between the hours of 8 p.m. and 11:59 p.m.

-- Avoid distractions. Just the same as you should avoid distractions when driving, the same holds true as a pedestrian. For example, don't text on your phone as you cross the street. Don't listen to music so loudly that you can't hear what is going on around you.

-- Only walk in safe places. For example, cross the street in designated areas. Along with this, stay on sidewalks when possible.

You can improve your safety as a pedestrian by following these tips. It's hard to imagine a situation in which you will be struck by a vehicle, but this does happen to thousands of people ever year.

Even with these pedestrian safety tips guiding you, a driver could cause an accident that lands you in the hospital. At that point, you should get the best treatment before considering your legal rights.
