A pedestrian accident can cause catastrophic injuries

Many of our New Jersey readers have ditched their cars in exchange for their own two feet. They enjoy walking from one destination to another, as opposed to getting behind the wheel, and perhaps want to reduce their carbon footprint.

While this may seem like the safer mode of transportation, keep this in mind: Pedestrian accidents do happen from time to time. As a result, the person who is struck by a vehicle could suffer catastrophic injuries.

Even if a vehicle is moving at an extremely slow speed, a pedestrian does not have any protection in the event of an accident. Subsequently, he or she could be seriously injured or even killed.

Our "Pedestrian Accidents" webpage explains this in greater detail, noting:

"A pedestrian has little protection when struck by a car. Although it depends on the nature and circumstance of the accident itself, pedestrian accidents often lead to catastrophic injuries, including spinal cord damage and paralysis."

While spinal cord damage and paralysis can occur as the result of a pedestrian accident, those injuries are just the start. Abrasions, broken bones, and brain injuries are also common.

Regardless of where you are walking or how many cars are on the roadways around you, it is essential to watch your step at all times. This is particularly true when crossing the road, as you never know when a driver will lose sight of you.

If you or a loved one have been injured in a pedestrian accident, you may want to learn more about your rights. Our website is full of advice, guidance, and stories of others who have been in the same position.
