How common are pedestrian accidents and injuries?

A pedestrian accident, regardless of the circumstances, can lead to serious injury or death. As one of our New Jersey readers, you are aware that these accidents occur from time to time throughout all parts of the state, especially in bigger cities such as Newark.

If you don't spend a lot of time on the road or reading the news, you may not realize that pedestrian accidents are as common as they are. A growing number of people are relying on their own two legs to get from point A to point B. While there are benefits of walking, there are also risks.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there was an increase in pedestrian fatalities in 2011 when compared to prior years. With the total reaching more than 4,400, it is easy to see that this has become a large problem.

Not only are pedestrian accidents common, but the injuries related to these incidents can be serious. From broken bones to brain injuries, many things can go wrong when a person is struck by a vehicle, even one that is moving at a slow rate of speed. Government agencies and police are doing their best to reduce the number of pedestrian accidents throughout the country, but with more people on the road -- both drivers and pedestrians -- this often feels like an uphill battle.

If a person becomes a victim of a pedestrian accident, he or she will need to seek medical attention. From there, they may wish to learn more about their rights by speaking with a qualified personal injury attorney.
