Medical mistakes could be a leading cause of death

Most people are familiar with the fact that cancer and heart disease are the top causes of death in the United States. However, here is something that may shock you: Medical mistakes, such as surgical errors, could be the number three cause of death.

According to two experts in the medical field, deaths associated with preventable medical errors total somewhere between 200,000 and 400,000 per year.

Their analysis of this growing problem, as published in The BMJ, notes that if medical errors qualified as a disease, it would rank as the third leading cause of death in the United States.

One of the experts responsible for the report had this to say in an interview with NBC News:

"We spend a lot of money on cancer and heart disease but we have not even recognized that medical error is the third leading cause of death in the United States."

Most people focus their time and energy on preventing disease. They realize that diseases such as cancer will have a big impact on their life. What many people don't do, however, is focus on the fact that their medical team could make a mistake that leads to their death.
