Types of medical malpractice claims

When you visit a medical professional, regardless of the reason, you hope this person will treat you in the appropriate manner. You are paying for his or her services, and want to get your health back in order as a result.

While most visits to a doctor are pleasant enough in terms of the final outcome, there are times when mistakes are made. If this happens, you are at risk of greater injury or illness. In the most serious of cases, medical malpractice can lead to death.

Many types of medical malpractice claims are filed every year, with many resulting from:

-- Failure to diagnose. This is when a medical professional overlooks a sign of a serious disease, such as cancer.

-- Birth injuries. There are times when an infant is injured at birth due to the negligence of a doctor, nurse or other type of medical professional.

-- Surgical errors. From operating on the wrong body part to operating on the wrong patient, these errors occur from time to time.

-- Prescription errors. This can include a pharmacy that fills the wrong prescription or a doctor that orders the wrong medication.

-- Nursing home negligence. This often times falls under the medical malpractice category, such as when a resident falls as the result of improper support.
