Birth injury is more common than some believe

Every woman who is pregnant worries that something could go wrong during labor or delivery. This is not extremely common, but birth injuries do occur from time to time.

There are some types of birth injuries that can be avoided. There are other types that occur without anybody being able to help.

Some of the most common causes of birth injuries include:

-- Miscommunication between the medical team, such as doctors and nurses.

-- Failure to respond to an emergency, such as fetal distress, umbilical cord entrapment, or bleeding.

-- Misuse of forceps or vacuum extractors.

-- Poor care of the baby following delivery.

All of these situations can lead to a variety of birth injuries, including the following:

-- Cerebral Palsy

-- Erb's Palsy

-- Brain damage

-- Fractured collar bone or arm

-- Temporary paralysis

-- Skin irritations

Did you know that approximately three out of every 100 births results in some type of serious birth injury? This statistic alone shows that birth injury remains a major concern for all parties involved, including parents as well as medical professionals.

There are situations in which a birth injury is caused by negligence. There are also situations in which the medical team does everything right, but an injury still occurs.

Nobody wants to think pessimistically when it comes to the delivery of their child, but it is good to know about the potential causes of birth injuries and what can be done to improve the overall level of safety.

If a baby is injured during labor or delivery, the parents may decide to consult with an attorney to learn more about their rights.
