The causes of cerebral palsy

As an expectant mother, it goes without saying that you will do whatever it takes to remain healthy at all times. During pregnancy, you will also take care of your body to ensure that your child is healthy.

As unfortunate as it may be, cerebral palsy remains a concern among all parents. This is caused by disruption in brain development or abnormality.

There are many things that can lead to brain development issues, including but not limited to the following:

-- Infection that can result in inflammation of the brain or surrounding area

-- Maternal infections

-- Fetal stroke, which results in a disruption of blood to the brain

-- Lack of oxygen, also known as asphyxia, during labor or delivery

-- Random mutations

While there are times when a child has cerebral palsy and there is nothing a medical professional could have done to prevent this, it is also important to note that medical mistakes could lead to this concern. For example, a mistake during delivery could lead to a lack of oxygen to the brain. As a result, the child suffers from cerebral palsy while also at risk of other health problems.

It may be hard to think about, but most expectant mothers are aware that things can go wrong during labor and delivery. This is why they attempt to surround themselves with the best medical team possible. Doing so can reduce the chance of a birth injury, such as cerebral palsy.

If individuals believe a birth injury resulted from medical error, they may want to learn more about their situation and rights by speaking with an attorney.
