New Jersey rabbinical student killed in New York

A Ukrainian national who has been studying to become a rabbi in New Jersey was killed in a crosswalk accident on Sunday morning in New York. The 25-year-old student was in Brooklyn to attend a celebration for the upcoming wedding of one of his friends. However, while walking in the Crown Heights area Sunday morning shortly after 9:00 a.m., the man was hit by a New York sanitation truck.

Authorities say that the man and two other pedestrians stepped into the crosswalk at the intersection of Kingston Avenue and Carroll Street. The pedestrians were walking parallel to Kingston in the same direction that a garbage truck was facing. However, witnesses say that the truck made a right hand turn at the intersection, striking the three pedestrians in the crosswalk.

The front area of the truck first struck the rabbinical student. Witnesses say that he was knocked to the pavement and the rear wheels rolled over the accident victim. He was killed. Two other pedestrians suffered minor injuries.

Witnesses believe that the garbage truck driver did not see the victims. The truck had a green light. However, law enforcement says that the pedestrians were crossing with a walk signal. The fatal accident remains under investigation. No summonses have been issued.

Safety for pedestrians and cyclists on New York streets is an issue that has been on the radar for city officials. Mayor Bill de Blasio is pushing for safer streets in his Vision Zero Action plan, which is aimed at reducing traffic fatalities in New York.

Failure to yield issues are far too common a problem in intersection accidents. A failure to yield may involve a variety of different scenarios. Accident victims, or the families of victims killed in an accident, should consider speaking with legal counsel about civil liability issues that may exist after a crosswalk accident.
