New Jersey motorcyclist struck by car in fatal accident

A 69-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a car driven by a 23-year-old woman who was attempting to make a left turn. Police on the scene said that the young motorist was traveling west on West Front Street in Middletown, while the biker was traveling east just before the fatal accident. At about 3 p.m. on Sept. 4, she was making a left turn onto Harbor Green Circle. She struck the man, who was airlifted to a hospital but did not survive. There had been no charges reported in connection with the accident.

The Federal Highway Authority stated that about 2,500 motorcycle accidents happen each year in New Jersey, with 377 motorcyclists dying on state roadways between 2003 and 2007. Although motorcycle registrations increased by 17 percent during that period, 22 percent of motorcycle accident deaths involved riders who had not gotten a motorcycle endorsement. Excessive speed was cited as a cause in 21 percent of motorcycle crashes. Also, 27 percent of these wrecks involved alcohol and 23 percent involved a rider with a license that had been previously suspended or revoked.

Because of these figures, the Federal Highway Authority recommended that the best defense against injury or death in a motorcycle accident was to obey New Jersey law, which includes the requirement to wear a helmet while riding. Specifically, it was recommended that riders slow down while taking a corner, since 40 percent of single-vehicle motorcycle wrecks occurred during turns and corners.

Death from a fatal accident can be devastating to motorcyclists, their passengers and everyone who knows them. A New Jersey lawyer with experience litigating after the loss of a loved one may be able to help bring about closure and start families on the road to recovery. Such help may include arranging compensation for loss of companionship and other damages.
