Wrong-way New York crash kills 2, injures mother and baby

In the moments leading up to a head-on collision caused by a driver going the wrong way, there are mere seconds to react. There is little time to weigh the least damaging options, let alone say goodbye to anyone who ultimately loses his or her life. A New York woman who was severely injured in a crash along with her infant son is trying to come to grips with the death of her friend who was in the driver's seat when a car heading the wrong way slammed directly into their minivan.

The accident happened a week ago on Interstate 87 near Albany as the women were headed to the Bronx to visit family. The two were longtime friends who were excited for the mother's relatives to meet her new baby. But they never made it there. The wrong-way car came into view only seconds before the impact, leaving the two women just enough time to glance at each other, knowing what was about to happen. The van swerved in an attempt to avoid the crash, causing it to roll over and slam into a guardrail.

The collision killed both drivers and sent the baby out of his car seat and through the window. When the baby's mother regained consciousness, she saw him lying facedown on the ground. A man outside the car ran to help, extinguishing the flames that had ignited around the car and rescuing the trapped woman. She and the baby both suffered several broken bones; additionally, the baby had multiple skull fractures.

Because of the wrong-way driver's actions, two people are dead, their loved ones are in mourning and the mother and her baby have a long road to recovery. Although the at-fault driver in this accident died, in many other cases car accident victims are able to obtain financial compensation from those responsible for the injuries and deaths that result. The best way to pursue that compensation is usually with the help of a personal injury attorney who understands what the victims are going through and knows how to handle the complexities of the civil litigation process.
